Since 2018 alternative folk/rock artist Danielle Schroeder has been emerging in the Vancouver music scene with the release of her latest EPs Ancient Desire (2023) and Between Two Worlds (2024) that have been well received by fans and press across the world. Danielle is looking to continue her career growth with the release of her new EP ‘Later is Here’ in June 2025.

Danielle's songwriting is an intimate exploration of life's most profound experiences - grief, loss and personal transformation inspired by lived experiences. "I am a counsellor and that has been an integral part of my identity and my music. I started writing music when I was working with people at end of life and their families. Opening myself up to creative expression alongside my work has been very meaningful and inspiring for me."

"Two songs from my new record- ‘The Ache of Living’ and ‘When All is Torn’ started to emerge last summer when a very dear friend of mine was dying of cancer. She was my age with children the same age as my kids and witnessing her say goodbye to her precious life had a profound impact on me. Writing these songs helped me process her death and the other songs on the EP were inspired by things that I am learning about myself as I continue to grow as a person through midlife and an artist " she says.

Drawing inspiration from artists and bands like The War on Drugs, Radiohead and Imogen Heap, "who I listened to a lot as I was working on the songs for this new EP," Danielle creates expressive soundscapes that compliment her deeply introspective lyrics. Her folk roots, largely influenced by Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, shine through in her soulful guitar work, particularly in her open-G tuning.

"I stuck with the crew I have been working with on all my records- Paolo Pietropaolo on piano/keys, Jeremiah Schneider on bass and electric guitars, and Aaron doing a lot of things. I am very happy with how dynamic and collaborative the songs sound."

While the music business is constantly changing Danielle remains grounded in the joy of creation rather than chasing industry trends. "Offering listeners a place to reflect, heal, and connect is far more important to me than going viral on listening platforms- although I wouldn’t turn that down!" she admits.

With a passion for storytelling and an unwavering dedication to her craft, Danielle continues to share her voice with the world- one heartfelt song at a time. And the world is loving what they hear.

The Ache of Living

“…At the heart of the sound, Danielle’s mature, earthy voice sits, confident and emotive, like a benevolent force, guiding you through the theme and the sound.” -Lost in the Manor

The Ache of Living is the first single for Danielle’s upcoming new EP ‘Later is Here’ to be released in June.

The song was inspired by personal loss, after the death of a dear friend last summer. Recorded at Monarch Studios under the eye of producer Aaron Klassen, The Ache of Living draw on artists and bands as diverse as Joni Mitchell, The War on Drugs and Radiohead to help craft an emotionally expressive sound that has the ability to reach audiences of traditional and alternative folk to modern Adult Contemporary pop/rock. She layers dynamic textures and intricate melodies, creating a rich, immersive auditory experience that resonates deeply within our souls.

The Ache of Living will be available on all streaming services on APRIL 27

Interview with Canadian Beats

FIRST OFF CARE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?

I am a singer-songwriter grateful to live on the stolen lands of Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil waututh nations, also known as Vancouver, BC. I am a mother of two daughters, who keep me on my toes, and also a counsellor. Songwriting and playing guitar have been passions of mine since my early 20s. At the time I never imagined a day would come when I would share my music publicly in the way I am today. For years it was very much a way for me to process my emotions, especially in the work I did supporting people living with cancer and those at the end of life. I grew up as a teenager in the 90s so a lot of my songwriting has been inspired by incredible female artists such as Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, Ani Difrano, India Arie, and Sarah Machlachlan.

HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS? DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC METHOD OR CREATIVE ROUTINE THAT YOU FOLLOW?

Good question! Songwriting is such an intuitive process for me, in the sense that rarely does it happen when I am thinking or trying too hard with my cognitive mind. Rather songs tend to emerge when I least expect it, and usually during a time when I am either wrestling with or trying to make sense of something that makes no sense at all in our world, or when I’m moving through something deeply emotional in my life. What I have found is that when I am quiet and present enough with myself, which usually happens outside on my little rooftop deck, with my guitar in hand, a song starts to appear, as though it was carried by the wind!
